The Center for Sexual Assault Crisis Counseling and Education is a wonderful local organization which supports victims of sexual violence with counseling and advocacy. The Center also works with schools, community organizations, corporations, and other non-profits to provide prevention education programming throughout our area. With a national and local spotlight on sexual misconduct with the #metoo and other movements, The Center has been responding to a marked increased demand for services as a result.
The Center receives no federal or state funding for their prevention education programs, despite a mandate from the state of Connecticut that all public schools engage in sexual assault prevention education. The Center works with students as young as 5, teaching them early concepts around consent, body autonomy and how to tell an adult. With the older students, The Center provides programming around sexual harassment, sexual assault, sexting and bystander intervention. With high school and college-aged students, they are able to have a deeper conversation about consent, the role of alcohol/drugs in consent, and how to intervene in various social settings. The Center feels that educating students, especially the youngest students, will lead to a decline in the number of future sexual assaults and eventually the elimination of sexual misconduct in the next generation. “We are proud to support The Center in their mission to stop sexual misconduct and the empowerment of survivors”. – Suzanne Zaleski
